Shillong - The Scotland of the East

As one of the earliest outposts of the British in the North East of India, Shillong has always been the meeting point of traditional cultures and cosmopolitan styles. As one of the India's best known hill resorts for many decades, it has its very own chars and attractions and its own following of regular seasonal visitors ! Shillong, (alt. 1946 m) the Capital city derives its name from the manifestation of the creator called Shulong, born to a peasant girl, but he bestowed the art of democratic governance and rule of justice in the formation of the princely state of Shyllong(Hima Shyllong); Which subsequently bifurcated into Mylliem State and Khyrim State in 1830. Today, the Iewduh Market in the heart of Shillong, the biggest inn the North East, under the administrative supervision of the Mylliem State, is a must for every tourist, to experience the feel and taste of local colour.

How To Reach

Air:The nearest Airport is Umroi(32 km) daily Vayudoot Service connects Shillong to Calcuta. Besides Indian Airlines and other Private airlines has its flight from Guwahati to Kolkata, Delhi, Imphal and Bagdogra. Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation's buses run daily between Shillong and Guwahati airport.Private taxis are also available at the Guwahati airport for travel to Shillong.The journey taking around 4 hours.

Rail: Guwahati(100 km) is the nearest railhead for Shillong which is connected with the rest of the country. Regular deluxe buses and taxis ply between Guwahati and Shillong. The road between Shillong and Guwahati is a dream for the motorists.

Road: Shillong is connected by a network of roads with all important cities of NE region.

Guwahati-100km.
Imphal- 614 km.
Kaziranga-294 km.
Kohima-496km.
Itanagar-481 km.


Local Transport

Taxis are easily available from 6  am to 8 pm but do not run on meters. Please make sure about your destination and bargain the fare at the onset. Most car drivers can speak broken Hindi or English. City buses and mini buses are also available from morning to evening. As these vehicles do not move on the numbered routes, it is advisable to enquire about their destination prior to boarding.
