Cherrapunjee - The Wettest Place on Earth

56 KM from Shillong lies Cherrapunjee also known as Sohra. It is known as the place that receives the world's heaviest annual rainfall. The average annual rainfall recorded over the last 20 years in Cherrapunjee is 12,063.3 mm. However there is very nominal or no rainfall during the months of November, December, January and February.

A pleasant drive to see roaring water falls leaping into deep gorges, including the famed Nohsngithing falls. Close by is a network of limestone caves between Cherrapunjee and Mawsmai, the end of which has not yet been explored. Its surroundings are also famous for orchards and orange honey.

The local people are a tribe called Khasis and have a matriarchal society. After the wedding the men move in to the house of their wives and their children take on the last names of their mother.

Getting there

By Road: Many tour operators run one or two day tours to Cherrapunjee from Shillong. From Shillong you can get a taxi from the taxi stand for about INR 1000. It takes 3 hours by taxi to get to Cherrapunjee from Shillong.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is Guwahati. Guwahati is connected to major cities like Kolkata and Delhi. From Guwahati you can take a shared taxi to Shillong for about INR 150 per head. The ride from Guwahati to Shillong takes about 4 hours. From Shillong hire a taxi to Cherrapunjee.

By Air: The nearest airport is Guwahati. There are a lot of domestic airlines connecting Guwahati to major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. Please see Indian airlines flight schedules for flight timings and online bookings.
