to VisitGuwahati - The capital
of the State of Assam
Guwahati has unique magical charms. Perhaps, the magic of
the demon king...Narakasura, who built the ancient city,
still rings the air. Or may be, it emanates from the
Nabagraha Temple (temple of nine planets), the seat of
astronomers who perform their miracles even today. Or you
may discover this magical charm in the sunset viewed from
the Bhubaneswari hills, as you lookdown upon the crimson
ripples of the Brahmaputra caressing the pale pink city...
Guwahati...The fast growing metropolis is the principal city
of Assam and one of the major cities in the eastern India.
Situated on the bank of Brahmaputra, Guwahati is known as
the Gateway of North-East India.
Situated beside the impressively wide and muddy Brahamputra
River, Guwahati is Assam's sleepy capital. Once known as
Pragjyotishpura (the Eastern City of Light) and mentioned in
Mahabharta, it has long been the most important town in the
region. It's now the service centre for the oil industry and
tea plantations; the world's largest tea auctions are held
here. Guwahati is pleasant, relaxed place. There are
numerous ancient Hindu temples in and around the town, but
its main importance is as the gateway to the whole of the
north-eastern region.
