Shopping in Guwahati and Assam

The name (Guwahati) is a combination of two words: "Guwa" meaning areca nut and "Hat" meaning market. Guwahati is the commercial nerve centre of the North-East. The places to shop for handicrafts and handloom items include the State Government's department store, Pragjyotika at Ambari as well as several private shops in Pan Bazar and Fancy Bazar, two of the main commercial markets.

Assamese Silk

Sualkuchi, near Guwahati is the largest silk prouducing village. Govt. Emporia like Pragjyotika, Jagaran , Purbashree sell Assamese silk. There are a number of private traders in the cities and towns of Assam, dealing in Assamese silk products.



Cane and Bamboo works

Cane and Bamboo works are sold by the Government Emporia and private firms all over the Assam. Commercial production and sale of cane and bamboo works are made in almost all district jails. The Satras of Majuli also produce exquisite handicrafts of cane, bamboo and wood.

Bell-metal, Brass products

Sarthebari and Hajo in the North bank of Brahmaputra is famous for brass and bell-metal works. Decorative items of brass and bell-metal are available in all Govt. Emporia.

Gold and Silver works

Typical Assames ornaments of Gold and Silver are produced by Assamese Goldsmiths all over Assam.

Tea

Guwahati is the largest Tea Auction market in India. Whole-sale purchases can be made in the auction market. Retail tea, including poly pack tea can be purchased from retail outlets and grocers.
