Assam People and Culture

Assam, that is Asom (which means the unequalled), is an enigma to the outside world. Many outsiders have the vision of it as the land of magic where through magical incantations unwelcome visitors are turned into meek sheep.

To others it is an expanse of jungles infested with venomous serpents, growling tigers, revengeful tuskers and hideous leopards etc. Yet it is a piece of heaven on the earth with the bountiful élan of life close to nature- a life that has been running through immemorial times in unison with passionately satisfying natural correspondences and spiritually edifying divine inspirations, one supplementing the other in a curious mixture.

Here the hills are as impenetrable and the numberless rivers as intricate as inscrutable are the ways of the Sakta-Cult or tantrism practiced here from the primitive times.The state of Assam is a melting pot where races as diverse as the Indo-Tibetan, Mongolian, Negroid, Aryans etc. drawn from the diverse hives at different points of time were synthesized and transformed into the colourful Assamese people.
