Assam HomeAssam Fairs and
Festivals
The culture of Assam is a rich tapestry woven with
multicolored yarns of distinct heritage of all the races
that inhabit her. The perfect fusion of heritage of her
numerous races have made Assam the home of the colorful
festivals.
Most of the festivals celebrated in Assam have their
roots in the diverse faith and belief of her inhabitants,
but a spirit of accommodation and togetherness characterizes
the celebration of all festivals. The Assamese Hindus
celebrate Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Laksmi Puja
and other festivals. The Vaishnavas who do not believe in
idol worship perform "Nam Kirtan" and celebrate the birth
and death anniversary of Shri Shankerdeva and Madhabdeva.
Those of Islamic faith celebrate Id and Muharram.
However, the most important festivals of Assam are the
Bihus, celebrated with joy and abundance by all the Assamese
people irrespective of caste, creed and religion, faith and
belief. The most colorful of the three Bihus ," Bohag Bihu"
or Rangali Bihu is the Spring festival, acelebrated in the
middle of April.
